"The largest contributing factor to all areas of global depletion is the raising and eating of more than 70 billion animals each year and the extracting of 1-2 trillion fish from our oceans annually" (1072).

1-2 trillion fish?? I find this statistic to be absolutely astonishing.

I knew that overfishing took a ton of fish out of the ocean, but I had no idea that that figure was up in the trillions.

"Where your food comes from has to be the most :out of sight, out of mind: process that exists in our culture today; it's obscured by many layers of cultural, political, and educational untruths and misperceptions" (1074).

This is totally true, but Naomi Klein and her documentary This Changes Everything have definitely made me aware of the corporate deception that drives food production.

"Also, while we certainly should be concerned about global warming, it is just one aspect of the much larger issue of global depletion. If you really want to reduce your negative impact on our earth, it is not so much a point of adding insulation to your house, for example, as it is what you elect to eat" (1075).

Good food for thought (pun intended).

"Most new vegetarians soon enough learn the first question that they repeatedly will have to field: Why do you abstain from meat-for health or for moral reasons" (1084).

I never really realized that there were two reasons that people become vegetarians--I always thought it was a moral dilemma. Shows how much I know.

Regardless of whatever reason people go vegetarian, I've noticed that they all seem to be profoundly happy with their eating habits.

"Ramon Moreno, who has worked in slaughterhouses for twenty years, explained to the Washington Post that his job is to cut the legs off the animals, and he "frequently had to cut the legs off fully conscious cows. They blink, make noises...heads moving and eyes wide open and looking around...." (1083).

Thinking about this is horrible--thank goodness Earthlings skipped over this atrocity because I honestly don't think I would've been able to handle it. Dismemberment or vivisection while conscious has always made me sick to my stomach.
